Spirit-Tending in the Fast Lane

This seasonal meditation is sponsored by the Spiritual Formation Ministry. We hope it will be a useful tool for staying connected to Spirit in the midst of the busyness of life, to stop and remember who and what matters.

May we suggest that prior to reading the meditation you take a couple of deep breaths, allowing your body to relax and unwind. Then begin reading slowly, giving time for the words to take hold.

If someone asked you what you wanted, what you desired for yourself in your life, how would you answer?  A relationship, a new car, a great job, more money, a house, health, a new electronic device, etc?  All are potentially good, but are not ends in themselves. They ultimately do not deliver the well-being and security that we seek. We humans always desire more.  We can become obsessed with having things and people. We can become overly attached which we name as addiction. What we desire reflects our longings and the unfulfilled yearnings of our hearts.

Have you ever thought about what you really want in your life; what you really, truly desire for yourself? Getting in touch with the true desires of our hearts is not easy. It takes reflection and prayer and thought and awareness.  Ann and Barry Ulanov in their book entitled Primary Speech: A Psychology of Prayer, states that “Prayer is the place where we sort out our desires and where we are ourselves sorted out by the desires we choose to follow.” Christians are called to remember and acknowledge that the deepest and most basic longing we have is for God. God alone can satisfy the yearnings of our souls.

Psalm 37:3-4 reads, “Trust in the Lord and do good; so you will live in the land, and enjoy security. Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Reflection Moment: Take a quick inventory of what you currently desire in your life. Write it/them down for future reflection and prayer.

Prayer Moment: Dear God, help me to see what I truly desire and what you desire for me. Amen
