Spirit-Tending in the Fast Lane

Spirit – Tending in the Fast Lane is the newest addition to the FUMC's website. It is a monthly meditation sponsored by the Spiritual Formation Ministry. We hope it will be a useful tool for staying connected to Spirit in the midst of the busyness of life, to stop and remember who and what matters. This page is a work in progress. Let us know what you think. Email Mary Garbesi.

May we suggest that prior to reading the meditation you take a couple of deep breaths, allowing your body to relax and unwind. Then begin reading slowly, giving time for the words to take hold.

In the Gospel of John, Jesus says, “I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.” What does this scripture mean to you?

At a recent conference, I was reminded of a reoccurring insight that I believe is related to this scripture. It has to do with process vs. product and reminded me that the process is as important as, and, maybe more important than, the product. Maybe you’ve heard that, too. This, however, is often very hard to keep in mind, especially in our culture where outcome is usually the focus. Everyone is looking for results. We want very much to get through the task, the job, the problem, whatever we face, especially if it’s “messy”, painful, or difficult, and get to a good, perfect, lovely, successful, happy end. Of course, there is certainly nothing wrong with desiring a good product or outcome. However, when we live in the future and focus on it, we miss what is happening in the present, not only the learning, which is sometimes painful or difficult, but also the joy and the Presence of God with us. There is power in the present. This moment is all we have. The past is gone and the future is not yet. At my first high school reunion, I won the prize for traveling the farthest. The prize was a mug inscribed with these words: “Happiness is not a destination, but a journey”. I still have that mug. Those words remind me of Jesus words, that he offers us abundant life now, in this moment, if we will stay present to his teachings and his presence in our process!

Reflective Moment: Where are you in relation to product and process in your life? What changes do you need to make?

Prayer Moment: Loving God, help me to see when I am not living in the moment. Help me not to miss the present by living too much in the past or the future. Amen.
