Spirit-Tending in the Fast
Lane
This
seasonal meditation is sponsored by the Spiritual Formation Ministry.
We hope it will be a useful tool for staying connected to Spirit in
the midst of the busyness of life, to stop and remember who and what
matters.
May we suggest that prior to reading the meditation you take a couple
of deep breaths, allowing your body to relax and unwind. Then begin
reading slowly, giving time for the words to take hold.
Pentecost is coming May 11th! It is celebrated in either May or June, the fiftieth day after Easter Sunday. Pentecost marks the early church’s receiving of the Holy Spirit. This was a profound experience for those present at the first Pentecost. We are reminded of this experience each year and pray for the Holy Spirit, God’s “gracious, enabling presence” to make itself known to us anew. We pray that we may open ourselves more and more to the Spirit’s power and movement in our lives.
Acts 2 scripture is traditionally associated with Pentecost. Peter interprets what is happening, referencing the Old Testament prophet, Joel, and Jesus’ promise at his ascension in Acts 1:8.
In The Message, Acts 1:8, Jesus responds to a question from his disciples as he prepares to leave them (Ascension of the Lord). Their question is, (verse 7) “Master, are you going to restore the kingdom to Israel now? Is this the time? Jesus says, “You don’t get to know the time. Timing is the Father’s business. What you will get is the Holy Spirit. And when the Holy Spirit comes on you, you will be able to be my witnesses in Jerusalem, all over Judea and Samaria, even to the ends of the world.” (Italics added)
Pentecost is a celebration of hope. We live in hope and are called to “be the hope” as we deepen our trust that God continues to send us His Spirit and believing that the Spirit is working in and among us. And that through its work, we are inspired to minister to a world in desperate need of the Good News!
Reflection Moment: Where in my life do I need the presence and work of the Holy Spirit?
Prayer Moment: Dear God, please send your Holy Spirit to those places in my life that need refreshment and renewal. Renew my hope that I may offer hope to the world. Amen.
Or pray your own prayer at this time.
