The
tragic driving accident at the Santa Monica Farmers Market in July 2003,
caused many of us to re-evaluate our driving skills. We should all take
responsibility for our safety and the safety of others when it comes to
driving.
The
following is an important checklist for all drivers to review:
- Vision:
Symptoms of problems could be narrowing of peripheral vision, sensitivity
to glare, cannot see well in the dark, pressure in the eye
- Hearing:
Not hearing a warning horn puts you at risk for an accident
- Reflexes:
Changes in the way we think and can slow reflexes when quick decisions
need to be made As we age we react more slowly to new situations.
- Staying
focused: depression and distractions can affect the attention to the
task of driving.
- Sleep
problems: Sleep deprivation could lead to falling asleep at the wheel
- Symptoms
of chronic illness such as diabetes, heart disease could cause lightheadedness
and possible confusion.
- Prescribed
medications could cause drowsiness or impair function.
You
should think seriously about whether or not you are a safe driver IF:
- You have had several fender benders
- You are getting lost on well known
roads
- Other drivers often honk at you
- Other cars or pedestrians seem to
appear out of nowhere
- Your doctor, family or friends have
expressed concern about your driving
