| Daily aspirin is taken by many people to reduce the risk of heart attacks. The aspirin decreases the ability of platelets to form the blood clots that cause heart attacks. A recent study revealed that ibuprofen (brand names include Advil and Motrin) blocks the aspirin from being effective. If you are taking daily ibuprofen for the pain of arthritis or other conditions, check with your physician that the study appeared in the 12/20/01 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. Also, ibuprofen can cause an increase in blood pressure, in some individuals. So, if you use ibuprofen regularly, it is important to tell your physician and get your blood pressure checked. If it is elevated, you and your physician may want to consider stopping the ibuprofen.
