Membership at First United Methodist Church

Members of FUMC covenant to support the work of the church within five important areas in the life of any church:

  • our prayers
  • our presence
  • our gifts
  • our service
  • our witness

Membership Information Meetings are offered periodically. They are for anyone wishing to simply explore Christianity at a deeper level, anyone wishing to find out more about United Methodism, and anyone wishing to explore membership at FUMC.

Those seeking membership may join on a Sunday morning during worship. Joining the church is a joyful event in the community of faith. And please know that when we say, “All Are Welcome,” we really mean it.

For information on membership and membership classes please contact the church office at 310-393-8258 or email.

Baptism & Confirmation at
First United Methodist Church

Baptism is the act of initiation by water into Christ’s holy church. Whether it is a child being baptized or an adult, in the United Methodist Church baptism is a covenant made between the family, God, and the church. In the United Methodist Church we baptize most often by what is called sprinkling, the sprinkling of water onto the head of the person being baptized. Baptism is almost always done as a part of a service of worship. We believe baptism involves commitments by the family to live a Christian life and by this church to surround and support the persons being baptized as models of Christian living.

The United Methodist Church baptizes persons of any age, including children. Because it is incorporation into the family of faith, our children are as welcome as our adults. Later, in the life of a child, it is the hope of the church that, because the child has grown and matured in faith, they will want to take the relationship deeper by entering into Confirmation and then join the church.

Confirmation is a process of classes, usually with eighth graders, that allows them to ask questions, deepen faith and understand the world in a broad way. What we offer equals out to forty-five contact hours over a period of four months. The classes are taught by Camille Mattick, Minister of Children & Family Life.
