Missions
FUMC has a Missions
Council. The role of the Missions Council is to support missions
initiative of the church and to encourage involvement of the congregation
in missions.
We
take seriously the mandate of Christ to address the needs and pains
of hurting people. This we do in a variety of ways:
- Alternative
Christmas - Throughout the year, but especially during
the Advent season the Missions Council sponsors Alternative Christmas
which is a way for individuals to support mission projects and
programs in our community and around the world, in the name of
a loved one. Share the SPIRIT of Christmas!
- Global concerns
of this congregation are attended to through its contribution
of nearly one-quarter million dollars annually for causes beyond
the local church, including helping our denomination support over
850 missionaries in their various ministries around the world.
- Covenant Missionaries
- We are supporting two couples in the mission
field.
Joseph and Lydia Templeton - innercity Los Angeles. They provide
legal assistance for the disadavantaged, and Lydia directs the
Children, Youth
and Family Collaborative which provides mentoring and tutoring
to youth in foster care.
Eunice Arias and Luis Aramayo - church planting and nurturing
in Guatemala. Eunice and Luis work with their local community
as well as with surrounding churches. They can now reach even
farther as they have a new vehicle provided, in part, through
memorial fund monies from FUMC.
- Iware
District of Nigeria Partnership - We continue to communicate
and pray with and for our sister churches in the Iware District
of Nigeria UMC. Communication is difficult but we continue to
support them with prayer and with financing for preschool and
elementary school.
- Gulf
Coast Partnership - Since the devistation of the
Gulf Coast due to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, FUMC has partnered
with Bethany UMC in New Orleans to help rebuild facilities and
ministries. In addition to this specific partnership, FUMC has
sent several work teams that have not only worked at Bethany but
at surrounding church and homes in the area doing much needed
repair work and clearing.
- Upward
Bound House - a housing development for senior adults
and families in transition, is an outreach and mission program
of this church. Family Place opened in the spring of 1997, and
Senior Villa opened in the spring of 2000.
- Health
Ministry - An experienced registered Health Ministry Nurse
is on staff who utilizes her nursing and spiritual commitment
in a healing ministry within the church community and who represents
the church staff on the Health Ministry Council.
- Food
Drives - We have four food drives each year. They benefit
the Family
Place Food Pantry, the Westside
Food Bank and the Imani Unidos AIDS Project food bank of Faith
UMC, Los Angeles.
- Big
Sunday - Each May the Los Angeles area has a work
day throughout the city and surrounding areas. FUMC is represented
well each year and participation continues to increase.
- Community
Thanksgiving - We participate in the feeding and
grooming of the homeless and hungry on Thanksgiving Day. We promote
and encourage our congregation to get involved with by donating/preparing
food or assisting on-site.
- Holiday
Tree Project - Each year FUMC supports a local group of children
and families by providing them with Christmas gifts, often much
needed practical items as well as toys and clothing.
- Camp
Colby - is a United Methodist Camp located in the
Angeles National Forest. Each year, groups of FUMC utilize the
camp for retreats and we also send a group to help with clean-up
in the early spring before campers arrive for the summer.
- The Social
Concerns Council is a group within FUMC which helps to
coordinate and encourage faith-based volunteerism in the realm
of social concerns and social justice, and to promote education
about and discussion of social issues.
- We support Nothing But Nets.
