Youth Ministry

youth

Youth Ministry Programs are open to all youth attending grades 6 through 12. Anyone over the age of 18 is encouraged to participate in FUMC's Young Adult Groups and Adult Groups.

The youth program at FUMC is a safe, Christ centered environment where youth can gain tools to help them explore and grow in their faith. Activities are designed to nurture relationships and build a strong, loving community. This is a place of acceptance, outreach and spirituality.

We are a community passionate about God and our world. Our program is full of fun, fellowship, service and spirituality!

Confirmation
Confirmation is a clergy led class covering a variety of topics related to the church, Bible and Christian discipleship. We end our confirmation class with a retreat and confirmation service on Pentecost.

Fisherfolk - Junior High Sunday School (grades 6-8)
Fisherfolk is a Sunday School class that familiarizes youth with the themes and content of the Old and New Testaments. The youth will worship in the Sanctuary for the first 15 minutes of the 9 am service, where they can sit in a special youth section in the balcony before going to class in Rm 306.

Senior High Sunday School (grades 9 - 12)
This class delves into the issues of the day and allows senior high aged youth to discuss topics from a Christian perspective. The group meets in Rm 301A (Senior High Room) at 9:15 am on the 2nd & 4th Sundays of each month.

UMYF - United Methodist Youth Fellowship (grades 6-12)
At 6:15 pm every Sunday the group has dinner together in Rm 300, then at 7 pm the junior high youth and senior high youth meet together or separately in Rm 304 (the Youth Lounge) and Rm 301A (Senior High Room), for devotions, discussion, recreation, parties, and programs. UMYF also consists of overnights, retreats and other events throughout the year for deepening spiritual growth and fellowship.

Acolytes, Crucifers & Lay Lectors (grade 6-12)
Youth are encouraged to assist in worship in any of these capacities. Acolytes light and extinguish candles in the sanctuary, carry the Bible and help facilitate worship in other ways. The Crucifer carries the cross and also helps facilitate worship. Lay Lectors are readers of scripture. They lead the Call to Worship and read the scripture passage for that morning. Training is provided for each of these responsibilities. They are all great ways for youth to be involved in the worship experience.

Youth Choir (grades 6-12)
The Youth Choir holds rehearsals on Sundays at 5:30 pm during the school year and sings regularly in church. The director is Patty Eskridge.

Youth Handbell Choir (grades 6-12)
The Youth Handbell Choir practices at 4:45 pm Sundays during the school year. The director is Patty Eskridge.

Youth News Weekly
Communication is a part of our history, from the early letters of Paul to the churches to the sermons we hear today. Through our weekly email we hope to connect one another into the life of the youth program. The weekly email is sent toward the end of the work week to prepare both youth and parents for upcoming events and other matters. For more information, or to be placed on the email list, contact Rev. Robert English at via email or 310-393-8258 x102.

Youth Service Project
Service is vital to the Christian life. We believe that it is our call from God through Jesus Christ to be in mission and relationship with those in this world who are in need. Both our Jr. High and Sr. High engage in mission work and service trips. We believe that there is need both locally and beyond. During the summer we have longer mission trips where youth experience extended service work in different areas of the country and state.

Youth Sunday
On Youth Sunday, the Jr. and St. High youth plan and lead a worship service. This service reflects the way they experience their faith in the world.
